This 3.5" set is almost certainly from 1849, the first year of manufacture for Jaques Staunton sets.  It has the classic very old "Cooke" style Knights, as well as the rare "J. Jaques London" stamp on the boxwood King, which is present on only the earliest sets.  (Jaques changed the stamp to "Jaques London" circa 1850.)  This set came in a box that has a rare hand-signed Staunton signature and register number; the labels on later boxes had a facsimile of Staunton's signature.
