AN ENGLISH IVORY PRESENTATION CHESS SET, turned and carved, the Knights formed from one piece, stained red and natural, Kings 10cm h, 19TH C contemporary mahogany box and folding board with gilt tooled morocco label inscribed Ye Councillor A B Crosby Nov 1st 1887 (34). Provenance:Arthur Burgess Crosby (d1932), Solicitor, Town Clerk and Mayor of Stockton on Tees, by whom presented as a Wedding Gift to the parents of the present Vendor. From the features of this set, including the carved knights and very recognizable attributes of the other pieces, I am sure that this set was manufactured by Calvert. I would actually be surprised if the rooks aren't stamped, but I can't check that until the set arrives. |
