Vegetable Ivory Chess Set

A VEGETABLE IVORY CHESS SET, English, 19th century, one side a toffee brown colour, the other side left natural, kings surmounted with Maltese crosses, queens with reeded ball finials, bishops with semi-split bulbous knops, knights as horses’ heads, rooks as graduated turrets, pawns with baluster knops, the king 7.1cm high, the pawn 3cm high, in a mahogany box.

‘Vegetable ivory’ is produced from the nut of the phytelephas aequatorialis plant, commonly found in South America.
