A Swiss Pearwood Animal and Bird chess set, 19th century, carved from light and dark wood. A similar set is illustrated in "Chessmen" by Mackett-Beeson, page 110. Swiss nineteenth-century carvers produced high-quality detailed softwood sets. Birds and animals were a regular theme, with "Bears of Berne" the most popular. King size 7.3 cm.
