German Selenus Chess Set

An early-to-mid 19th century German carved and turned bone Selenus pattern two tone Chess Set.

Kings and queens of tiered form with pierced decoration and open-work crowns to their tops, the bishops surmounted with urns, knights with carved horses heads, rooks with castellated round towers, their domed tops with a crescent moon finial, and the pawns of a fine turned design. One side natural polished bone, the other stained cochineal red. Many of the finials surmounting the pieces set in the alternate colour. King size 10 cms.
