A bone chess set. English, circa 1850, in a 19th century box by W. Howard, London
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with cogged finials and mult-baluster centres, queens of smaller size with reeded ball finials, bishops with open mitres, knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets, pawns with ball finials, in an attractive 19th century fruitwood box with a sliding lid: W. Howard's...Superior Chessmen...London Made, the king 8.5cm high, the pawn 3.4cm high, the box 14cm wide.
