English Ivory Playing Set by J. Barr, circa 1855 |
||||
Fine turned & carved ivory chess set, one side stained red other side left natural. White king with makers label on bottom - 'J.BARR IVORY TURNER 69. LONGACRE AND AT THE ROYAL PANOPTICIAN'. Kings & queens with maltese crosses, bishops with open mitres, knights as fine carved horses heads, rooks as monobloc towers. Interesting set from a less well known maker. I was able to find entries in the London Directories for John Barr at 69 Longacre from 1851 through 1859. The Royal Panoptician ran from 1854 through 1857, so this set can be dated to that time frame. |
