English Merrifield-type Ivory Chess Set

Jon's main chess page

An English Merrifield-type ivory chess set, mid 19th century, one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings surmounted with Maltese crosses, queens with reeded ball finials, rope-twist decoration and surmounted with unusual floral or feather finials, bishops with split mitres, knights as carved horses' heads, rooks as turrets, pawns with baluster knops and reeded ball finials, the king 9cm high, the pawn 4cm high, in a mahogany box with a sliding lid.  Note the interesting "spray" finial on the queen.

I am 99% sure that this is a Merrifield set. All attributes, especially the knights, match verified Merrifield sets.
