Antique Friesland Chess Table, 1860-1880

This chess table was made in Friesland, a north province in The Netherlands, circa 1860-1880. The carving technique is called "Fries kerfsnede," and the carved motif and Dutch black polished edges were popular during the reign of King Willem III. The table is made of lime wood and the base is carved and painted with floral and bird designs.
